Wilson – Protocol is blockage to VAT cut

DUP East Antrim MP Sammy Wilson has said the call by Sinn Fein Finance Minister Conor Murphy for a reduction in VAT on energy bills flies in the face of his Party’s call for the “full implementation” of the NI Protocol.

Mr Wilson said,

“I agree with Conor Murphy, there should be a VAT cut on energy bills but our case would be helped massively if his Party stopped calling for the “full implementation” of the NI Protocol.

The Protocol is the reason why the Government has not cut energy VAT and the one tax cut the Government has delivered on energy efficiency could NOT be given to Northern Ireland because of the NI Protocol.

Rather than grandstanding in the NI Assembly with pointless recalls, Sinn Fein would be better to join us in getting the Protocol replaced with arrangements which work for Northern Ireland.

There’s one way the Treasury could reduce energy costs and circumvent the Protocol and that would be to give people a holiday from the green levies which form more than 10% of our bills.”
