Wilson – “HMG is surrendering leverage”

The DUP’s East Antrim MP Sammy Wilson has said the Government decision to delay any checks from the Republic of Ireland to Great Britain until 2022 amounts to a surrender of leverage.

Mr Wilson said,

“Whilst the EU is insisting on checks from GB to Northern Ireland, it is hard to reconcile why the U.K. Government has given a cast iron commitment that there will be no checks on goods coming from Ireland to GB until 2022.

Instead of building leverage, the Government is surrendering leverage.

Every day that passes the Protocol is doing further damage to the Union and to our economy. Time is of the essence. By pushing this deadline back to 2022 the Government seems to be showing a lack of urgency. Such a lax approach will have significant consequences for stability in Northern Ireland and will be a mistake for both Brussels and London.

As Jeffrey Donaldson outlined last week, too many in Northern Ireland have reached the end of the line with words. They want to see action. They want to see the protocol’s trail of political and economic destruction brought to an end.”
