Wilson – “scarce resources must be carefully managed”

DUP East Antrim MP Sammy Wilson has challenged the Secretary of State as to why building a £300m GAA stadium was his top priority on day one rather than properly funding our schools and hospitals.

Mr Wilson said,

“Very significantly, the Secretary of State’s reply to my question recognised that even if the Government found the money for Casement Park, it is not clear that the stadium could be built on time for the 2028 Euros.

We stand by the carefully balanced agreement on stadia for three sports in Northern Ireland. It achieved fairness and equity. That must be the yardstick moving forward too. We can’t have one sport being treated more favourably than the others. That strikes at the heart of basic fairness.

With people waiting more than twelve months on a simple MRI scan never mind a hip replacement, it is clear there are massive demands across our schools and hospitals for funding.

I want to see this new Government properly funding our public services before pouring millions into a stadium for a few football matches. If resources are scarce, then they must be carefully managed.”
