The legislation provides greater flexibility for parents in deciding when their child starts school.
Mrs Dodds is a member of the Assembly's Education Committee and she said,
"This is a hugely significant change and it helps ensure that all our children get the very best start on their school journey. Whilst it will not affect all children, for the parents of those 300-400 children who are likely to take up a deferment, it offers them a vital choice.
This is something which has received overwhelming support from the public and I am delighted that the Minister has ensured this Bill has now passed into law.
The early years of childhood are fundamental to the future development and potential of our children. Making this change can help ensure that no longer will a child be required to start school before they are ready due to their premature birth."
