Speaking after an Urgent Question in the House of Commons Mr Robinson said,
“The SAS were absolutely justified in their approach on 16 February 1992 in Clonoe. That IRA unit mounted a mammoth machine gun on a lorry to take the lives of police officers in Coalisland and anyone else that got in their way. They went out to kill and were killed.
It’s time for the Government to stand up for our soldiers. It speaks volumes that, the IRA’s getaway driver that night was given a three-year suspended sentence but received £75k damages from the MoD for being shot, meanwhile the SAS are now under scrutiny.
One of the other members in the House said “the law is an ass and it needs changed”, we agree. The idea that an IRA getaway driver did receive compensation and people like Gerry Adams could receive money is utter madness. This not only dishonours the memory of those who lost their lives but also sends a perilous message that undermines justice and the rule of law."
