Mr Robinson said,
"The Prime Minister must stand up for Northern Ireland and recognise that our unique position may require specific support from the Government if we become victims of EU retaliatory trade actions.
As I made clear during Prime Minister’s Questions, the pledge to act ‘in the national interest’ on potential US tariff changes rings hollow unless it addresses Northern Ireland’s distinct circumstances.
While Northern Ireland’s exports to the USA fall under UK policy, previous governments, backed by Labour, ceded control of our imports to the European Union. This leaves us exposed and any EU retaliatory tariffs against the United States could unfairly punish Northern Ireland, despite our constitutional and economic place within the UK.
The Government must act decisively. Either secure an exemption for Northern Ireland from EU actions or, if the EU refuses, take retaliatory measures against them to safeguard our interests.
The DUP will not tolerate Northern Ireland being left vulnerable or treated as a bargaining chip in trade disputes. We will keep pressing Westminster for a robust plan that protects our economy and ensures Northern Ireland’s voice is not just heard, but acted upon.”
