Mr Robinson said:

“This was a useful opportunity to speak with Simon Harris today while he is in Belfast. I emphasised the importance of fostering mutual respect and cooperation for the benefit of both our countries. As Foreign Minister, I reminded his team about the importance of the Republic respecting the three-stranded approach to relationships.

Whilst Sinn Fein failed to become part of the Republic’s government, I emphasised the need to avoid narrow political agendas that risk destabilising Northern Ireland. There should be no attempt by parties in the Republic to “out green” each other. We must focus on building strong and balanced political relationships that deliver lasting benefits for all.

In the course of our discussion, I reminded Mr Harris about the need for the Republic of Ireland to launch a public inquiry into the Omagh bombing. It is deeply unfair that the recommendation for this inquiry has not yet been advanced. This bomb was planned, built and transported from the Republic into Omagh. The two inquiries should be running concurrently.

I trust we can continue to have open, respectful and honest dialogue.”
