Mrs Dodds said “Family budgets are under huge pressure currently with rising bills, including the price of food. This announcement by the Education Minister will be a welcome relief for the 100,000 children who are entitled to free school meals and their families.

The £12.6million allocated to this programme is a significant investment by the Education Minister. In this instance we have a Minister not just talking about the problems but taking positive action to help. Ministers remain in post and they have the ability to take decisions. Other parties and other Ministers should follow that example instead of wringing their hands and blaming others.

These are the same parties who complain but did not even respond to a positive proposal put forward by Sir Jeffrey Donaldson in March of a rates cut for every household with an expansion of the Energy Payments Support Scheme for others.

I will continue to work with colleagues, both at Stormont and in Westminster to deliver support for hard working families both through local Departments and the UK Government.”
