The Force which provides armed guards at 11 Army Reserve bases across Northern Ireland were told earlier this year, that despite previous promises, the MoD would move to replace their roles by next year.

Mr Brett raised the concerns on the floor of the Assembly today.

Speaking afterwards he said,

“The Northern Ireland Guard Force have played a hugely important role in protecting both members of the Armed Forces and the public. Their treatment by the MoD has been disgraceful.

Having been previously told that replacement of their roles would be done on a phased basis which would not be complete until 2028, they have now been told that their roles will now be replaced by next year.

This announcement was made without any consultation or due regard to staff. Current staff have been given no guarantee that they will be awarded new posts and there has been no discussion of TUPE transfer or that they would be entitled to the same terms and conditions.

The principles of the army are clear; courage, discipline, respect for others, integrity, loyalty and selfless commitment. Those have been displayed by the Northern Ireland Guard Force, but the same cannot be said for the MoD.

We will continue to stand with these brave men and women who have served the people of Northern Ireland with distinction.

This decision must be reviewed immediately.”
