Speaking after the meeting Mrs Dodds said, “It was a useful opportunity today to meet with the Commissioner and discuss the needs of survivors of abuse. In common with other areas in Northern Ireland this must be a victim-centred process and we owe it to them to ensure they not only receive compensation, but that it is a system which meets their needs.
There is a review of the redress process underway and we will need to see that completed and the new recommendations that will flow from it in order to judge how progress has been made. I also underscored with the Commissioner the need to highlight this scheme to survivors No one who has been affected by this should miss out.
There are a series of challenges still to be achieved, including issues around contributions to funding the scheme. However, it is vital we ensure at this stage that it is victim centred and properly focused on those who suffered so much.”
