He will use the debate to call for the support of Translink’s funding application to provide year-round late-night public transport.

Speaking ahead of the debate he said.

“The night-time economy is not just a critical driver of our economic growth, but also of cultural vibrancy and community cohesion.

The night-time economy across Northern Ireland employees 40,000 people, with an annual economic value of £3.3 billion.

For many years Translink have provided a very successful seasonal late-night service.

Despite being confined to just four weekends this Christmas, 2024 was the most successful yet, with approximately 17,000 passengers using the service across the bus and rail network.

The positive benefits of a year-round late-night service are both clear and undisputable.

Translink have now submitted a business case to provide a year-round service, which could begin as soon as Easter.

I am using today’s debate to seek a commitment from the Minister to support this proposal.

The message from the industry and the public is clear, they want to see this proposal delivered. This could be a real gamechanger for Belfast, for our economy and for our people.

The Minister cannot allow this opportunity to be missed.”
