The East Belfast MLA, who is also Chair of the NI Assembly Justice Committee, said:
“This is an outstanding report on Hydebank Wood. This recognition marks a significant milestone in its transformation over the past decade. Once regarded as a failing facility, it is now recognised for outstanding performance, achieving top ratings from independent inspectors and outdoing similar facilities in England and Wales.
This demonstrates what can be achieved through strong leadership and hard work. Hydebank Wood has been transformed into a safe environment that prioritises rehabilitation and personal development. Such progress is vital to ensuring those in the facility have a better future.
The work of the staff and management deserves praise. Their commitment to progress has been central to achieving these inspection reports. This approach is crucial if we are to reduce reoffending rates and ensure a justice system that is effective in delivering positive outcomes.”
