The DUP MP said, “We have supported the families call for an Article 2 compliant investigation, in line with the recommendation of the High Court. Today’s announcement is another step along the way in that process, and should represent another step towards truth and justice for all those impacted by this atrocity.
It is important that victims are at the centre of this process and the terms of reference for the inquiry must have buy-in from those most affected by it. The Government should not only consult with them on this but seek their assent prior to publication.
It is important that inquiry proceeds, but most important that it proceeds with their support.”
West Tyrone MLA Tom Buchanan added, “The families of those murdered in Omagh have shown great strength and determination throughout their campaign. Anything achieved today has only been because of their resolute focus.
The families have always recognised however the cross-border nature of the incident and the need for investigations on both sides of the border. Whilst the attack was perpetrated within Northern Ireland it was planned, prepared and transported from within the Republic. That too was recognised by Mr Justice Horner’s conclusion in the application for a judicial review.
It is more important than ever that the Irish Government follows the lead that has been set and do not run away from their responsibility to help uncover the truth.”
