Immigration legislation must apply equally across the UK: Robinson

DUP Leader Gavin Robinson has challenged the Government to ensure that legislation on immigration applies equally across all parts of the United Kingdom.

He raised the matter during Prime Ministers Questions with the Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner.

Speaking afterwards the East Belfast MP said,“The DUP opposed the Windsor Framework because of its impact on the United Kingdom. We have also opposed recent immigration legislation because it would not apply to Northern Ireland because of the Windsor Framework. We warned that the scope of the Windsor Framework was straying into these areas and our position was subsequently proven correct by the courts. It is impacting on the ability of our Government to legislate on a UK-wide basis on immigration.

Expansionism by the European Union is nothing new, but it must be robustly and effectively challenged by the Government. The United Kingdom must have the ability to control our own borders, and that includes Northern Ireland. The Deputy Prime Minister was correct to state that it should be Parliament that makes rules on immigration. However, that should also be the case for many other areas also, but they have allowed the European Union to intrude on those in relation to Northern Ireland.

Beyond the words from the Government is is time to see action in relation to control of our borders, and an indication that they will legislate to ensure that happens across all parts of the UK.”
