The DUP MP said, “The cut to the Winter Fuel Allowance was imposed on older people across the United Kingdom by the Labour Party. It was a decision by Labour alone, without any discussion or input from any of the devolved regions. That speaks to Labour’s priorities when a pay increase for train drivers earning £60,000 for a four-day week was a lower priority than support for pensioners to heat their homes.
DUP MPs will join with others across the House of Commons to vote against this attack on pensioners. Our Peers will also seek to block the measure when it comes before the House of Lords on Wednesday. We will continue to seek any opportunity possible to help the most vulnerable in our society, including pensioners who are fearful about how they will heat their home this winter.
Whilst few expect sufficient Labour MPs to rebel against the decision in Parliament, it is important that pressure is focused on Kier Starmer and his Government who are responsible for this action. We will continue to keep a focus on the Government to highlight the reality of their actions and for a reversal of this punishment on older people.”
