Speaking after the meeting DUP Leader Gavin Robinson said, “The DUP pressed for the creation of this post to ensure that veterans here in Northern Ireland had a voice who could specifically articulate their needs and the issues they face. Since his appointment David has got down to work immediately and this was a very useful opportunity to discuss the unique situation and challenges for veterans in Northern Ireland.
The Armed Forces Covenant is not about giving special treatment to veterans, but simply to ensure they are not disadvantaged because they have served our country. We are determined to continue making progress in this area, as represented by DUP Councillors securing support within Belfast City Council to sign up the Covenant. That journey continues and we want to see the expansion of the Covenant duty to include employment, pensions social care and criminal justice.
In his role as Commissioner, I know David will continue to be a strong advocate for veterans and we will continue to support those efforts in whatever way we can.”
