The DUP Assembly Sports Spokesperson added:
“This is great news for Northern Ireland, and our local economy. Events like the North West 200 are the jewel in our crown and are enjoyed by people from across the World every year, and we simply could not afford to lose iconic events like the North West 200.
We have such a rich sporting heritage in motorcycling racing in Northern Ireland, both on our roads, and tracks with stars including former World Champions such as Jonathan Rea and the iconic, Joey Dunlop, all local riders who have reached the top in their sport.
I would like to commend Mervyn Whyte or all his efforts to secure the event for 2023, and I know that an incredible amount of work has been undertaken by Mervyn and his team to secure this good news. I know the public will support this exciting event and I trust that a strategic way forward can be found to secure the long-term future of this special event.'
