“Blair ‘Paddy’ Mayne is a hero and a legend, not just in his home town of Newtownards, but right across the United Kingdom.
It is vital that we honour his memory appropriately, both in how his story is told, but also how it is recognised by our country. While the BBC programme SAS: Rogue Heroes has brought much-deserved attention to the incredible feats of the brave men of the Special Air Service, it is important to note that the portrayal of Paddy Mayne, while accurate in highlighting his heroism, takes significant creative licence with his character, which risks overshadowing his remarkable life and service.
What is not in doubt however is Paddy Mayne’s extraordinary bravery and leadership as one of the founding members of the SAS during World War II. His record is unparalleled. His actions saved countless lives, and his legacy deserves the highest recognition our nation can bestow.
The time has come for formal recognition of the heroic service of Lieutenant Colonel Blair ‘Paddy’ Mayne by awarding him the Victoria Cross. Paddy Mayne is not just a military hero - he is a symbol of courage and determination, and I hope that even now long after his passing, the country can give Paddy Maybe the honour he deserves.”
