The DUP MP said, “There have been four reported sexual assaults or attempted sexual assaults in Londonderry within the last week alone. These attacks follow the murders of 24 women in Northern Ireland since 2020 and across the UK on average 140 women have been killed every year since 2009.
Whilst Justice is a devolved issue, it is important that women see action taken across the country because they should be able to feel safe in any part of our country.
The Minister outlined that she would be bringing forward further details on tackling this scourge and I look forward to hearing those plans. Whilst the Northern Ireland Executive has brought forward a strategy, there will always be lessons to learn from other areas, and by joining together across the UK we must take strong decisive action.
Unfortunately there is no simple answer to this problem, but it is one that we cannot ignore.”
