DUP North Antrim MLA Mervyn Storey has welcomed the Policing Board’s decision to back his Party’s call for an independent investigation by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services into the PSNI’s handling of the Bobby Storey funeral.
Commenting, Mr Storey said:
‘‘I welcome today’s agreement and am pleased that our proposal commanded broad support from both political and independent representatives of the Board.
That the PPS deemed police actions to grant protection to senior members of Sinn Fein from prosecution is deeply disturbing. It raises fundamental, unanswered questions about fairness and impartiality in our police service. It remains our position that any senior officer who approved of or contributed to the decision-making around this policing operation is in an untenable position.
An independent, external investigation of police policy and practice toward the funeral will inevitably identify other learning which can help start the arduous process of rebuilding public confidence. It is essential that we establish all of the facts. This is non-negotiable.
Authority to commission this inspection ultimately rests with the Justice Minister. In light of widespread public anger and the Board’s endorsement, it is critical that she moves swiftly and decisively to call in HMICFRS and hold the PSNI to account.’’
