Sir Jeffrey - Getting it right must be the goal

Speaking after meeting the Prime Minister today, DUP Leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson said.

“This is a big moment. The next generation of Northern Ireland depends on the actions of the Prime Minister and the EU Commission President in the coming days.

They will either consign Northern Ireland to more division or they will clear a path to healing and restoration.

Over the last 48 hours we have been engaging with officials and very late last night the Prime Minister asked to meet.

Despite all those engagements, we have not seen final text. Based on discussions it is our view that there remains significant areas for further work to be completed.

Progress has been made in some areas and while that is welcome in other key areas, it currently falls short of what would be acceptable and required to meet our tests as set out.

If and when any final agreement is reached we will want to carefully consider the detail and decide if the agreement does in fact meet our seven tests.

Any agreement would be at a headline level and the detail will be in legislative changes both in London and Brussels.

I have indicated to the Prime Minister that it is important he agrees the right deal.

I want to hear that Brussels will stretch itself to recognise the concerns of unionists.

This is a process to correct the wrongs of the last negotiation. No one should be led by a calendar. Getting it right must be the goal.”
