Confirmation came after a question from Sir Jeffrey at Prime Minister’s Questions today in Parliament.
Speaking afterwards Mr Donaldson said, “Yesterday was a hugely significant day for the Northern Ireland Assembly as it voted for the first time on whether an EU law should apply in Northern Ireland. The ability to hold such a vote on the application of new EU rules and regulations in Northern Ireland only came about because of action taken by the DUP and our determination to tackle the democratic deficit.
Progress secured by the DUP made this possible, and we are working to ensure that what was agreed within the Safeguarding the Union Command paper is delivered as we seek to make Northern Ireland work for everyone within the Union.
We are focused on delivery and ensuring Northern Ireland’s place within the United Kingdom and its internal market as outlined is delivered. Key to that is the ending of unnecessary checks on goods moving from Great Britain to Northern Ireland save for criminality, smuggling and abuse of the system. The forthcoming regulations will be a further significant milestone on delivering everything that has been agreed.
Next week will see further progress for Northern Ireland on the delivery of commitments contained within the Safeguarding the Union command paper.”
