Significant questions for Infrastructure Minister over bonfire court action

DUP Upper Bann MLA Jonathan Buckley who also chairs the Infrastructure Committee in the NI Assembly has questioned why Nichola Mallon is using Department resources to take court action against a bonfire.

Mr Buckley said,

“There are tens of thousands unable to get a driving test. The backlog for MOTs is similarly out of control. Young people are travelling to GB for their driving test yet the Minister responsible seems more concerned about bonfires.

The Minister should be careful that such legal action against a bonfire is not motivated more by party politics and electoral strategy than by Departmental priorities.

This bonfire has no hazardous materials therefore beyond a cultural opposition to bonfires, the Minister needs to explain her actions.

The improper use of Departmental resources would be a most serious matter. The idea that the Minister’s actions are also not controversial would also seem highly unlikely. As such it would not be a decision for her to take alone and therefore outside of her legal authority.”
