DUP MP for East Londonderry Gregory Campbell has tabled a Parliamentary Question to the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland to establish when the Deputy First Minister cancelled her scheduled meeting with the Prince of Wales.
Mr Campbell said,
“The decision by the Deputy First Minister to decline a meeting with His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales was a step backwards for Sinn Fein.
Whilst the DUP was content to meet with the Head of State of the Irish Republic in a courtesy visit many years ago, only in recent years has Sinn Fein permitted some of its members to meet the Royal Family.
I want to move Northern Ireland forward by building a shared future, yet such regressive politics, as apparently displayed by the Deputy First Minister, will only lead Northern Ireland backwards.
This action by the Deputy First Minister is another act of disrespect for those living in Northern Ireland who support the Royal Family and welcome their visits to this part of the United Kingdom.”
