DUP Foyle MLA Gary Middleton has said the border checkpoints by the Republic of Ireland and potential fines for anyone travelling from Northern Ireland show the nonsense of some Pro-Protocol spokespeople who argue there is no border.
Gary Middleton said,
The SDLP and Sinn Fein seem to have been sent in a bit of spin by this.
As someone who lives a few miles from the border, I’ve never been in any doubt of its existence. Different currency, different fuel duties, different health service, different education system and even a different speed limit. Nonetheless, the SDLP and the other Protocol loyalists seem to be living in some parallel world where they believe no border exists.
The Garda checkpoints and fine system for anyone travelling across the border is entirely the preserve of the Irish Government but it does point once again to the reality that the border exists. We are two countries.
