The DUP MLA said, “This is a hugely positive announcement by the Minister that will undoubtedly save lives amongst the pupils, staff and visitors to our schools. Whilst sudden cardiac arrest may be more prevalent amongst older people, we know all too tragically that it can even impact those of school age.
There are many schools which already have defibrillators installed but there are over 600 schools which still require these devices. It is very welcome however that the Minister will also work with those who already have AEDs installed to fund their ongoing maintenance and their replacement when that is necessary.
A defibrillator or AED, combined with properly administered CPR make a very significant impact upon survival rates. CPR and awareness of the use of defibrillators have been mandatory elements of the school curriculum since 2022 and today’s announcement is a natural next step in that process. I have no doubt this will be warmly welcomed as a positive and practical step that will make a real difference in communities across every corner of Northern Ireland.”
