North Antrim MP Ian Paisley has welcomed confirmation from Treasury Minister Jesse Norman MP that HMRC’s online system will now accept Northern Ireland driving licences as proof of identity.
Commenting Ian Paisley said,
“This is good news for people who had to register for the Self-Employed Income Support Scheme and other support measures.
Whilst I commend the Treasury on the swiftness of getting the various Covid-19 support schemes in place and the unparalleled workload, it was a major frustration to people in Northern Ireland that their driving licence could not act of one of the forms of ID needed.
This was a matter which I alongside colleagues had been pressing HRMC to address. The link between the DVLNI database and HRMC should also act as a future proofing to ensure we do not encounter such problems in the future.”
