The DUP’s pro-life spokesperson in Westminster said:
“I am deeply concerned by the latest moves by those championing legislative provision for assisted suicide, and the attempt to remove the NHS’s fundamental purpose of preserving life.
This marks a dangerous shift in healthcare. It will undermine the trust between patients and medical professionals. The NHS was founded to protect and care for the most vulnerable, not to facilitate ending life. Changing its purpose risks placing intolerable pressure on doctors and nurses, forcing them into ethical dilemmas that contradict their duty to preserve life.
Those championing this unethical legislation need to think of the range of consequences their policies will have. For example, patients, particularly the elderly and disabled, may feel they are a burden rather than valued individuals and will take decisions based on the perception. That is wrong.
We must safeguard life, not erode the principles that underpin compassionate healthcare in the UK.”
