The East Antrim MLA said:
“Safer Internet Day 2025 is about highlighting the importance of staying safe online and adding our voice to the call for stronger protections in the digital world. The internet is a fantastic tool, but it also presents serious risks, from scams to harmful content which can be especially dangerous for children and young people.
Recent figures show that nearly 43 million UK adults have been targeted by online scams, with a quarter falling victim. One in five victims lost over £1,000. Meanwhile, young people are increasingly being targeted by fraudsters on platforms such as TikTok, or through other forms of exploitation online. This is completely unacceptable, and we must do more to protect people from online dangers.
There are simple steps we can all take to stay safe. Be cautious of unsolicited messages, never click on suspicious links, and always verify online offers. Using strong, unique passwords and talking to young people about online risks are also crucial in creating a safer digital environment.
The Online Safety Act, passed in 2023, was a step in the right direction, but the truth is that social media remains a Wild West. Regulation must go further to hold tech giants accountable and ensure they prioritise user safety. The Government must step up enforcement and take stronger action against harmful content and online fraud.”
