Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart has reiterated her call to the Health Minister Robin Swann MLA, and the Health Secretary Matt Hancock MP, for a fair pay settlement for healthcare workers. The DUP representative has written to both Ministers to express support for the campaign as we mark Nurses Week this week.
Carla Lockhart said:
“Nurses Week 2021 is a great opportunity for society to take time to reflect and express gratitude for the amazing work of our nurses. In the last year we have seen our nurses on the frontline battling the pandemic, as well as continuing other key services in what have been extraordinary and unprecedented. We owe each and every one of our healthcare workers a great debt of gratitude.
One way I believe we could show how much we appreciate the professionalism, dedication and expertise of our nurses is to pay them at a level that reflects the invaluable role they perform. Government proposals of a 1 per cent rise are simply not good enough. This would set a precedent for a local settlement which would not be anywhere near good enough.
I have written to both Robin Swann and Matt Hancock to press them for a pay settlement that puts right the issue of nurses pay. This has to be fair, and reflective of the value we as a society place on our healthcare workers.”
