DUP Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart has met with the National Crime Agency’s Director General Lynne Owens.
Ms Lockhart met with the NCA to discuss the rise in cybercrime and making social media a safer place.
Commenting Ms Lockhart said,
“The number of complaints raised with me by constituents about all forms of cybercrime in deeply disturbing.
Where 30 years ago the burglar was outside our homes and we just had to stop them from getting in, today the threat is in almost every home and most worrying in the hands of our children and young people.
At the height of the Covid-19 lockdown, the scammers were still at work on social media. Whether it was fake car salespeople, ransomware hackers or revenge porn blackmailers, they were still carefully selecting and torturing their victims.
A cybercriminal not only crosses police force jurisdictions within the British Isles but extends across continents. That is why I was speaking with the NCA and exploring how we can better equip our forces to put the criminals out of business and keep our citizens safe.”
