Justice Minister’s ‘nothing to do with me’ attitude will concern police and public

DUP MLA Trevor Clarke has said that whilst the High Court judgement has further damaged the office of the Police Ombudsman, both police officers and the wider public will be concerned by the Justice Minister’s ‘nothing to do with me’ attitude.

He was speaking after tabling an Urgent Question in the Assembly on the ruling.

The South Antrim MLA said,

“My Urgent Question asked what steps the Minister would take to uphold public confidence in the Ombudsman’s Office, yet the Minister repeated the well-worn ‘nothing to do with me’ speech.

Rather than offer any answers to either the former officers who took this case, current serving officers, or the wider public, the Justice Minister couldn’t offer any detailed view on how this issue might impact on any aspect of the justice system.

The High Court ruling was damning for the Police Ombudsman and comes on the back of previous rulings in relation to that Office. Any reasonable person should be able to see the impact this has on public confidence.”
