DUP North Antrim MLA Mervyn Storey who is also the Party’s lead member on the Policing Board has said the settlement for Barry McCaffrey and Trevor Birney raises serious questions for the police.
Mr Storey said,
“This was a seriously botched operation. When I was briefed about this case in the immediate aftermath of the gentlemen being released it was clear to me the police approach seemed seriously suspect. It had all the hallmarks of taking a sledgehammer to crack a nut.
With the case now concluded and the award of costs and damages made, I have written to the Chief Constable to ascertain the entire cost of this case including police time both here and in Durham. There needs to be full transparency.
The headline figure today is of compensation but I imagine the total cost of this mess will be many multiples of this.”
