DUP East Antrim MP Sammy Wilson has welcomed the Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s decision to extend the Job Retention Scheme.
Commenting Mr Wilson said,
“We have been pressing the Chancellor and the Prime Minister about the need to avoid a cliff edge with the Job Retention Scheme. An extension is the right decision with a direction of travel into the autumn.
This step will help avoid redundancies and being able to phase workers back in through part time roles is also very important to enable employers to gradually crank up their work stream.
We will need to continue looking at the economic supports in a sector by sector manner as there will be some sectors such as hospitality and tourism which will be slower to reboot than others.
This announcement is also a reminder of how important it is for Northern Ireland to be part of the United Kingdom. The Northern Ireland Executive could not afford such a significant support scheme.
As the Executive plans its economic recovery road map, we will need to ensure it is in step with Treasury as that largess is critical to Northern Ireland being able to afford help for employers. This scheme has been an absolute lifeline for many employers and has helped safeguard thousands of jobs in Northern Ireland.”
