Commenting on the decision, Mr. Campbell said:
“I welcome Ulster University’s swift response in revising the promotional material for the new Sport and Exercise Sciences course. It is essential that the university acknowledges the need for a more inclusive approach that better reflects the wide variety of sports enjoyed by people across all communities in Northern Ireland. A ‘GAA only’ approach is not going to help in an area where the university, like other employers, has an under representation of Unionists, it would be totally counterproductive to promote a course by only using a sport predominantly played by non-unionists.
University life has the ability to bring people together and transcend divisions. By promoting a broader spectrum of sports, Ulster University is recognising our shared society. This is in the context of Protestants being underrepresented across courses in the university.
I have urged UU to ensure that future promotional efforts are fully considerate of the diverse interests and backgrounds of potential students.”
