Speaking after the debate, the DUP MP said:

“The challenges facing high street retail across the UK are stark and require urgent, targeted intervention.

During my Westminster Hall debate, I highlighted the critical pressure on businesses including rising operational costs and changing consumer habits. Too many once thriving town centres now struggle with vacant shop units and declining footfall, leaving local communities without the vibrant retail hubs they once relied upon. The reality is clear - high street retail is dying, and without bold action, its decline will become irreversible.

Small independent retailers are under immense pressure. Rising costs, large multinational chains dominating high streets, and the pull of out-of-town shopping centres with free parking are creating a perfect storm that is squeezing the life out of High Street retail. In a number of towns across the North Coast and much further afield we have seen long-standing businesses close because they simply cannot compete. The soaring cost of energy, business rates, and rent is squeezing small traders, while large retail parks and multinational corporations continue to spread. I have called for a 5% VAT rate for Nothern Irelands hospitality sector as the Irish Republic are about to reduce their already low rate even further.

Piecemeal policies are no longer sufficient. Over 2.5 million jobs are sustained in retail across the UK and they need to be supported. Government must introduce meaningful business rate reform, provide targeted financial support for independent retailers, and work with local Councils to revitalise town centres. We need decisive action to safeguard the future of our towns and cities. I will continue to press for real solutions to reinvigorate our high streets and breathe new life into areas that should be the heartbeat of our communities.”
