DUP Westminster Leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson has said the decision by the Government to extend the grace periods highlights the problems with the Northern Ireland Protocol.
Sir Jeffrey said,
“Whilst supermarkets and those bringing in goods via our ports from Great Britain will be relieved to see extensions to the grace periods, we will be continuing to press the Government for a permanent solution.
Grace periods do not provide the long-term certainty that businesses and consumers in Northern Ireland require. The Protocol has been demonstrated to be unworkable. The Government clearly recognises the economic problems but they must also acknowledge the political rejection of the protocol.
The Prime Minister has committed to the unfettered flow of goods from GB and NI and it is time for him to set out the path to delivering on this commitment.”
