DUP Health Spokesperson and Deputy Chair of the health Committee, Pam Cameron MLA has welcomed today's announcement from the Department of Health regarding increased testing measures for Northern Ireland’s Care Homes.
Mrs Cameron said “The Department of Health have ramped up their testing capacity to address the widespread concerns about residential home settings. Testing is now available to all Care home staff and residents in a more co-ordinated effort to limit, isolate and contain any further spreading of the virus.
These measures will further help us tackle the spread of COVID-19 and protect loved ones in the various residential care settings across Northern Ireland.
According to the Department, ‘over 25% of the care home population’ have been tested to date with that percentage now set to increase more rapidly with the further roll out of systematic testing amongst homes.
Care Homes have been described by some as the new frontline in the fight against COVID-19. Many residents of Care Homes are amongst the most vulnerable in our society. I would urge the Department to maintain that foremost focus and continue utilising all resources available to help those Homes that are facing severe difficulties due to the spread, as well as greater protecting those which have been thankfully unscathed by the virus."
