DUP North Down MLA Gordon Dunne has welcomed confirmation from the Economy Minister Diane Dodds that work continues with the Government to secure solutions to problems created by the Northern Ireland Protocol.
Commenting Mr Dunne said,
“Whether with retail, haulage, livestock, pets, second-hand cars or steel importation, the Northern Ireland Protocol has posed significant problems and been the root cause of disruption.
Whilst we opposed the protocol and warned about these problems, I welcome the confirmation from the Economy Minister that she has been engaged in intensive efforts to get practical solutions. I also commend the Government on working with us to secure a work around for the second-hand car industry but that was only one solution in one sector.
I am encouraged by the Government’s commitment to get a solution for the heavy manufacturing sector who depend on steel imports via Great Britain. A 25% tariff would be crippling for the industry therefore the work which is ongoing to resolve this matter is invaluable to thousands of jobs.
The DUP will continue working both through our team in Parliament and the Northern Ireland Executive to press the Government for practical solutions.”
