DUP Westminster Leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson has welcomed the Prime Minister’s commitment to take action to restore Northern Ireland’s place within the internal market.
The Lagan Valley MP raised the Northern Ireland Protocol at Prime Minister’s Questions in the House of Commons and sought confirmation from Boris Johnson that the passing of the EU Withdrawal Act and the Northern Ireland Protocol that forms part of it has not resulted in “an implied repeal of Article 6 of the Act of Union”.
Speaking afterwards he said, “The Prime Minister gave a very clear assurance on both his commitment to restore Northern Ireland’s place within the UK internal market and his belief that there has been no implied repeal of Article 6 of the Act of Union.
The assurance on the Act of Union is particularly significant given the focus upon the issue of implied repeal within the legal challenge against the Protocol taken by senior unionist representatives.
The Prime Minister is also correct in his assessment that the Protocol is totally disproportionate and as someone who is committed to the Union and to Northern Ireland’s place within it then I look forward to action from the Government to bring forward solutions that restore our place in the UK Internal Market.”
