North Antrim MP Ian Paisley has expressed his disappointment that the organisers of the SupercupNI have made the decision to cancel this year's tournament.
The DUP MP said, "It is hugely disappointing that this year's SupercupNI will
be a victim of the covid crisis. Whilst we are now looking towards
better times, it is understandable that the organisers have had to take
this decision given the situation not just here but in other parts of
the world from where teams would travel.
The priority now must be in looking to next year and ensuring that the competition will return in 2022. The SupercupNI is hugely important to Northern Ireland, both in terms of the benefit to our economy, but also from the exposure and advertisement given from the many prestigious teams who regularly travel to take part.
Whilst it is important to Northern Ireland as a whole, that is particularly the case for my own constituency and in those of neighbouring colleagues. There are many local businesses which benefit directly from the tournament. It is essential that everything is done now, both from Councils and Tourism NI to ensure that 24th July 2022 marks the commencement of a SupercupNI that is bigger and better than ever."
