Speaking at a Retail NI event at the Belfast Harbour Commissioners Office, Diane Forsythe said:

“High streets are the backbone of our communities, yet they face mounting pressures - rising costs, declining footfall, and unfair competition from online giants.

Northern Ireland has the highest proportion of retail employment in the UK, but without urgent action, our town centres risk irreversible decline.

The Labour Government’s decision to raise employer National Insurance contributions as well increasing wage costs and outdated business rates are all factors that are pushing retailers to the brink. It is unacceptable that high street retailers pay more in rates than online corporates pay in taxes.

We need meaningful business rate reform and a tax for online giants to level the playing field.

The DUP is committed to solutions. We’ve invested in town funds, secured City Deals, and supported initiatives like ‘above shops’ housing. We back better late-night transport and targeted financial support for independent retailers. But piecemeal policies aren’t enough, decisive action is needed.

The Department for the Economy must act swiftly on the High Street Task Force’s findings. We need a bold, strategic approach to breathe life back into our town centres. The DUP will continue working alongside businesses to deliver real change, ensuring our high streets remain the heartbeat of our communities.”
