It’s truly an honour to be here today, standing before you all as a mother of two, a dedicated DUP MLA, and a newcomer learning to balance the whirlwind of family life with the even more tumultuous world of politics.

Last year, I shared my journey into politics with you. Now, a year later, I am grateful for the privilege to address you once again.

What a year it has been.

As depicted in my video, I've attempted to encapsulate my life as an MLA in 60 seconds. It can only be described as frenzied, an honour, and the reason for a very serious coffee addiction.

Every second of this rollercoaster journey has been a love affair for me. It has pushed me, transformed me, and propelled me out of my comfort zone. I have accomplished things that I would have never thought possible or ever had the confidence to undertake.

For that, I cannot express enough gratitude to the party for placing their trust in me, and to our MLAS, Councillors, office staff, branch, friends and family who have been an incredible source of support throughout.

Being a mother has grounded my work as an MLA. I understand what it’s like to be concerned about healthcare access, to navigate the school system for a child with special needs, and to manage a budget while ensuring my kids are happy and safe. These experiences aren’t just my personal reality; they shape my political priorities.

When I advocate for better childcare, fair funding for schools, or increased support for families facing medical challenges, I am not doing it from a distance. I am living it, just like so many of you.

My maiden speech focused on childcare, a privilege in itself.

This was a joy, as our party is committed to, and has delivered on, childcare and early years support. It’s not just about ensuring parents can go to work or pursue opportunities. It’s about providing every child with the best start in life.

But when it comes to the future, education is at the heart of everything. Schools in my own constituency of East Antrim, and across Northern Ireland, deserve better funding and investment.

As a mother of two children with different educational needs, I understand the importance of ensuring that every child, whether they require additional support or are excelling in the classroom, has access to the resources they need to succeed.

I am dedicated to ensuring our schools are well-equipped, our teachers are supported, and our children are given every opportunity to flourish. This is about giving our kids the best start in life, whether they dream of being doctors, teachers, TikTokers, or even future MLAs themselves.

As a DUP MLA, I take pride in advocating for real investment in our schools, ensuring that every child, whether they are like my little one who needs extra help, or my 12-year-old who seems to need nothing but Wi-Fi, can thrive. – If the education minister could lend me one of those pouches for home, it would be quite helpful!

One thing that fills me with pride is representing East Antrim, a place that holds great significance for me. From Larne to Carrickfergus to Monkstown, we are blessed with incredible communities, enduring traditions, and untapped potential.

Whether it’s advocating for local infrastructure improvements, securing investment and support for our businesses, or obtaining funding for recreational and cultural spaces, I am committed to ensuring that East Antrim thrives.

And let’s not forget our stunning coastline, historic landmarks, and, of course, our marching bands scene. Our culture here is so rich, and I am passionate about preserving it for future generations, changing the mindset, and promoting our events and celebrations – which we should be so proud off.

Promoting tourism is a vital driver of our economy, and it’s essential that we continue to invest in it. But it’s not just about attracting visitors; it’s about creating sustainable jobs, supporting local businesses, and ensuring that when people come to Northern Ireland, they don’t just see it—they fall in love with it.

One of the greatest challenges as an MLA is balancing the demands of work and family life. I strive to find that balance; it’s not easy, but I work on this every day.

During my short time I’ve learnt a few things about resilience, grit and determination.

I’ve also learnt that Diane Dodds appreciates a sharp fitting blazer and Harry Harvey is the happiest man I’ve ever met!

Despite the challenges, I am often asked why? For me, the answer is simple: because I love my community. There is nothing more rewarding than witnessing the positive impact we can make together. Being an MLA offers me the chance to make a difference – an opportunity to shape the future – and that’s something I am incredibly proud of.

Life as an MLA isn’t always easy, just like life as a parent isn't easy. Both roles are incredibly rewarding, both give you many sleepless nights, and both require copious amounts of caffeine or involve me crying in my car.

But at the end of the day, it’s all worth it. It is a privilege and an honour to serve, and I am grateful every day for the opportunity to be your voice.

Because whether I’m working to improve funding for our schools or wiping crayon off the walls at home, I know that what we do today builds the future we all want for tomorrow.
