Vice Chair of the Health Committee Pam Cameron has said that comments from the Older Persons Commissioner on care home visits must be taken seriously.

The DUP MLA said, "I met with the Commissioner yesterday and I recognise many of the comments he has heard from people about the distress they feel in not being able to visit relatives. These echo the same concerns I and other elected representatives will have heard also.

The Commissioner's sole focus is on the wellbeing and needs of our older population, therefore his comments about care home visitation must be taken seriously by the Department of Health and by care home providers. I recognise the effort undertaken in those homes who have been facilitating visitation, but there are many instances where this is not the case.

We have made significant strides forward, particularly in relation to the Covid vaccination programme. However, it is clear the threat from coronavirus is not the only danger faced by our older population and re-connecting them with their loved ones is something which must be given the priority outlined by the Commissioner in his comments."
