Mr Campbell said,
“I have tabled a Motion in Parliament so Steven Davis can be recognised in this place as not only one of Northern Ireland’s but also one of the United Kingdom’s greatest sporting talents.
Mr Davis, at 39 years old, holds the UK caps records with 140 appearances for his country. Throughout his professional career, he has chalked up 742 Club appearances in topflight football in England and Scotland.
Eventually greats like Steven Davis retire, but this motion is an opportunity for MPs to say thank you and have his achievements recognised in the Parliamentary record.
To reach the top of any sport requires incredible natural skill but it also demands huge sacrifice by those nearest and dearest to sportspeople. I wish Steven and his family every blessing in retirement and thank him sincerely for his contribution to football and the many special moments he gave us both playing for Club and Country.
With the recent appearances of Conor Bradley in the Liverpool squad, it is great to see more new Northern Ireland talent reaching the top.”
When Mr Campbell raised this in the House of Commons, Leader of the House Penny Mordaunt MP responded by saying,
“I am sure that the whole House would want to join him in his congratulations to both Conor and Steven on all that they have done to make us all very proud.”
