DUP South Antrim MLA and Vice-Chair of the Health Committee Pam Cameron has welcomed confirmation by Defence Secretary Ben Wallace that 100 members of the military will be deployed to Northern Ireland to support the accelerated rollout of the Covid vaccination programme.
Responding, Mrs Cameron said:
‘‘This is fantastic news and once again demonstrates the strength and depth of the national commitment to supporting the fight against Covid-19 in every region of our United Kingdom.
The addition of one hundred medically trained military personnel will provide a welcome boost to the health and social care staff who have thus far spearheaded a highly successful roll-out of the vaccine across our Province. Their arrival will coincide with the launch of the mass vaccination centre at the SSE arena and will help to ensure the next phase of the programme targeted at the general population runs as smoothly and effectively as possible.
As was the case in January and February when the military assisted on our wards at the height of the third wave, I have no doubt that these personnel will be warmly welcomed by everyone in Northern Ireland. With this practical support for our health service we and look forward with confidence and optimism to the day when we firmly put Covid-19 in the rear view mirror.’’
