DUP South Antrim MLA Pam Cameron has hailed the approval of the Oxford/AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine as “a tremendous boost for Northern Ireland and the rest of the United Kingdom in our fight against this disease.”
Mrs Cameron, who is also the vice-chair of the Northern Ireland Assembly Health Committee said,
“As we stand on the cusp of a new year, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency’s approval of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine is wonderful news for Northern Ireland. It is also a mark of the scientific genius within our United Kingdom that such progress has been made.
This vaccine is significantly easier to store and transport which will enable a more rapid vaccination programme roll out which begins on Monday 4 January. Our supply of this vaccine should also be more readily available as Her Majesty’s Government has ordered one hundred million doses.
I commend the vaccination teams and their work so far which has Northern Ireland sitting right up the leaderboard across the world for the percentage of the population already vaccinated.
It will of course take time for the vaccine to have a meaningful impact on the transfer of the virus amongst the population. In the meantime, we must all recognise our personal responsibility to limit the spread of Covid-19 by washing our hands, keeping our distance and reducing our movements.”
