Marking ‘Back British Farming’ Day today (Wednesday) in Westminster, DUP MP Carla Lockhart has urged the public to support the local agriculture industry and continue to back British farmers by buying local produce.
Carla Lockhart, the DUP Agriculture Spokesperson at Westminster, said:
“Our farmers work day and night to produce the world class food we have on our tables and enjoy on a daily basis.
As we have charted a course through the upheaval and difficulties of recent months caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, local farmers have fed the nation. We owe them a great deal of gratitude for their continued commitment to this task.
We are blessed in this part of the world to have beautiful countryside and world class production and animal welfare standards. Our farmers, as custodians of the countryside take this role very seriously and as a community all of us benefit from this. Likewise, the commitment to the highest possible standards of production is also something we should cherish.
As the UK develops a new Agriculture policy outside of the EU it is vital that we back British farming by buying local, but also that the Government support the industry by protecting food standards. That is something I am championing at Westminster. Our farmers cannot be sacrificed for free trade deals that would swamp our UK market with substandard product, in terms of quality or production methods.
On this Back British Farming Day, let us all do what we can to support our farmers.”
