The South Down MLA said:

“I am pleased to see this important legislation being introduced, having personally raised the need for baby loss certificates in Northern Ireland at the Finance Committee last year as the law was progressing. These certificates provide a very tangible way to formally recognise the heartbreaking loss of a baby before 24 weeks. It allows families to have their little one acknowledged, offering comfort during an incredibly difficult time.

This initiative aligns us with the rest of the UK, following the success of the scheme in England. It is only right that parents in Northern Ireland have the same opportunity to recognise the life that was lost, however short.

I also welcome the progression of electronic registration of deaths and stillbirths here. These changes will modernise and improve how we support families through some of the most challenging moments of their lives.

This is important progress, and I will continue to advocate for compassionate policies that provide dignity and recognition to grieving families across Northern Ireland.”
